Woman Knitting
Chaim Soutine (1893-1943)

Soutine was an impressionist painter of poor Russian birth who emigrated to France at the age of 20 to paint.

This lady has been one of my favorites for a long time, ever since I saw her on exhibit about fifteen years ago.

You can see more of Soutine's work here.

oops! i assumed it was a woman painter before clicking on more info!

thanks for introducing me to an artist i've never heard about before. very amazing. i would have loved meeting her.

It's a good thing he's captioned the picture. I thought she was wringing her hands. Come to think of it, that's probably what Continental knitting looks like to the uninitiated.

I get the impression that the painter felt knitting to be complicated. Her hands are all knotted up and she has such a daft expression. Plus, we can't even see the knitting!

She's like a witch.
