This pleasant soul is a knitter (tricoteuse) from the Auvergne province in France. Can you imagine how much knitting those hands did in her lifetime?
Perhaps she lived in a village like this one, St.Flour in the Auvergne.

What a lovely image! And the smile and twinkle in her eye is wonderful. We camped through that area one summer when I was a child.
